You’ll need some focal batik prints to carry your quilt’s overall color scheme. Then add some lighter, contrasting batik prints to bring this quilt design to life. Since my stash was filled with fat quarters, I cut 5″ squares myself…all 99 of them.

Lattice Strips Cut from Contrasting Batik Fabrics
Then the 1 1/2″ lattice strips were cut to border two adjacent sides of each 5″ block. First sew the 5″ strip and press. Next sew the longer 6″ strip to create an ‘L’ shaped border around your charm square.

Prepare Charm Square Blocks for Sewing

Choose Your Charm Square Block Layout
Choose whether to sew your blocks randomly or lay them out on your design wall to control color placement. Now it’s time to begin sewing. First chainstitch your blocks together into 9 rows of 11 blocks. Before pressing, chainstitch your rows together being careful to nest your seams which will keep your rows nice and even. Press your assembled quilt top well and prepare it for quilting.

A Border May Be In Order

Add A Beautiful Border for Balance
Since only two sides of each charm square is bordered, there are some unfinished blocks along the edges. The final step is to add a narrow border in the lighter blue to bring all the blocks together. Then a 5″ dark blue border that matches the backing is perfect for a second outer border to finish off this beauty.
