Make This Ruffled Valentine Mug Rug
Made entirely from scraps, this quick little quilted mug rug will never turn out the same no matter how many times you make it. Piece the top layer first with three different areas of strips. Draw two diagonal lines in any design layout you like best and start sewing on your strips in sections.

Beginning with the center strips, sew them from the top down while staying within the diagonal pattern. Sewn in a crazy quilt method, place the first piece right side up. Then place the next strip on top with right sides together. Sew a 1/4″ seam along the bottom edge, starting and stopping at the diagonal lines. When the strip is opened out and pressed, you’re ready to add the next strip. Keep adding those strips until you reach the bottom.

Then the sides are added at an angle and topped with a pair of sweet little ruffles. The strips are added in the same manner as the center, except they are sewn towards the outer edge. The first strip is placed over one of the diagonal lines and sewn with a 1/4″ seam. Open the strip and press in place. Once all the strips are added to both sides, the edges are trimmed even with the base fabric.
Add Ruffles To Your Valentine Mug Rug

Ruffles are an easy finish to these little hearts. The ruffles have raw edges as does the outer edge of the mug rug. It provides a much looser ruffle that lays nicely across your heart.
Cut a 1″ strip of fabric that is almost twice the length of where you want it placed. Double your stich length and sew down the center from one end of the strip to the other. Pin one end of the ruffle strip to your heart.
Then, from the opposite end of the strip, begin to gently pull on the top thread. The fabric will begin to gather. Be careful not to pull the thread out completely, but just enough to cinch up that fabric. Begin sewing from the pinned end, down the center to the opposite end. Continue gathering your ruffle as you sew along the strip. After your ruffle is stitched in place trim off the excess strip.
Finishing Your Valentine Mug Rug
To finish your Ruffled Valentine Mug Rug, pin all four layers together. Place the finished top over the two layers of batting and a bottom layer of felt. All this padding is perfect for absorbing your coffee cup’s heat. Once pinned, quilt all the layers together by sewing in the ditch along the two diagonal seams. Also sew along one of the bottom strips in the center section. This quilting will keep all layers right where they need to be.
All that’s left is to finish the outer edges. First zig-zag a 1/2″ seam around the outer edges. Trim the excess fabric away from the stitching. Then zig-zag a second round to keep everything secure and finish off the cut edge. You may use a tight satin stitch if preferred, but I chose to keep the stitching looser. The last step is to trim any loose threads and you’re finished.
You’ll love this quick project and enjoy gifting these sweet heart to your family and friends. Don’t forget to make one for yourself!
