SIMPLE Scrappy Quilt from Scraps
Easy Steps to a GORGEOUS Quilt
Watch how to create a simple, scrappy quilt from fabric scraps. I’ll show you just how easy it can be to create a stunning quilt from your fabric pile! This is a simple and fun way to upcycle your leftover fabric pieces into a beautiful quilt that you’ll love.
My first and favorite step is to sort and organize the scraps I want to use. This sets the colors and tone of the quilt. Maybe you like bright and bold, or perhaps you prefer subtle and dreamy. Either way, just follow these steps and you’ll be creating a one-of-a-kind quilt everyone will love! Whether your quilt is intended for snuggling up on the couch or as a thoughtful gift for a loved one, it’ll be a winner. So, pull out your fabric scraps and let’s get started!
Creative quilting from fabric scraps repurposes our leftover fabrics while saving us money for new fabrics. Buying fabrics for each quilt you make is expensive. So, when buying yardage, I always add a quarter to half yard to each piece. You’ll be surprised how quickly these small pieces pile up! There will always be a usable, fabric scrap pile waiting for you.
By using leftover fabrics, we’re giving them a new life and using them with our inspired ideas. Allowing us to create a quilt that is truly unique that we love.
How to Start a Scrappy Quilt
Use Simple Methods to Use Your Fabric Scraps
Many of us have been there – with a stash of fabric scraps that seems too small or too mismatched to be of any use. It’s common to think that these scraps are destined for the trash or a donation box, but what if I told you that with a bit of imagination, they could become something beautiful? The truth is that fabric scraps can be incredibly versatile. You’d be surprised at the stunning projects you can create with pieces that were once considered too small and useless.

The first step in our scrappy quilt journey is to gather and sort our fabric scraps by color and size. This helps in visualizing how they can work together in a quilt. If you enjoy working with precut fabrics, set aside those large pieces and cut them into your desired size. Then look at the rest and see if they can be joined in some way to become the size you want.
How to Choose a Scrappy Quilt Pattern
When it comes to choosing a quilt pattern, look at the ones you enjoy and are also easy. A quick finish is a great reward for your first scrappy quilt! For beginners, a simple pattern like a strip quilt or a charm pack quilt works wonders. This is also a perfect opportunity to join your fabrics into larger pieces. Think about joining narrow pieces into long strips. Long strips are a perfect opportunity for many scrappy quilts. Check out my Quarter Log Cabin Quilt. It is super scrappy and made completely with 2.5-inch strips. Joining the strips creates lots of colorful transitions throughout this quilt that will attract everyone’s attention!
Look at this gorgeous quilt I made from my scraps! This is made from 5-inch charm squares. It begins with a charm pack, but lots of scraps were included to brighten up the design. The light low volume squares are splashed across the quilt, while the bright batiks bring focus to the charm squares. This layout is only one option with a simple block like this. That’s the fun of scrappy quilts, laying out a beautiful design that showcases all those fabulous fabrics.
Simple Scrappy Quilts are FUN!
I love how these leftover fabrics are transformed into something new! It’s fun to take scraps sitting in a pile and turn them into keepsakes. A lovely quilt has been created that’s not only wonderful but also meaningful. Every piece of fabric has been carefully chosen and stitched together to tell a story of imagination and creativity.
Remember those scraps we hold on to are favorite fabrics we’ve used in other quilts. We bought them because we loved them and now, we get to use them again! Beware, scrappy quilts can become an easy favorite and you’ll be making lots more.

My Favorite Simple Scrappy Quilts
Potato Chip Quilts have been my favorite for the last couple years. They are perfect scrappy quilts as they are made with only 2.5-inch x 4.5-inch rectangles. That makes them very simple. As a matter of fact, I always cut a few of these little rectangles from extra fabric when I’m making any quilt. I tuck them in a little plastic bag and they are ready when I am!
These blocks can easily be cut from scraps or precuts, so you have lots of options. Even better, because the fabrics are cut to this smaller size, it’s very easy to combine lots of different fabrics together within a single quilt top. Everything seems to blend into a beautiful, all over design! Take a look at some of these post below.
