How to make an Easy Scrappy Christmas Log Cabin
Simple Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt Block
My scrappy quilt method shown in the video above is so easy and fast, and it’s perfect for beginners. For my scrappy quilt, I used a combination of red and green fabrics, along with some neutral tones, such as gold, white and black, to balance everything out. After sorting my scraps into sizes, I looked at how they could be joined together. If your scraps aren’t precut to specific sizes, consider what size pieces you are able to cut from small to medium to large. My blocks used a 6-inch center square and everything else was cut to 3.5-inch squares and strips. This way everything fits together.
Scrappy Quilt Techniques
Your first step is to group your fabrics pieces by size. This way you know which pieces need to be sewn together and also determine possible block sizes. Beginning with the smallest sizes, join them along one side. Then take a strip and cut it to the length of your joined pieces. Now you have three pieces that create a block. If you’re good with this size, make more.
Otherwise add another strip or two to get the size you want. Do keep in mind that for these blocks to be joined they must be a common size. Otherwise, you’ll need to add strips as you sew to get the blocks lined up. But that takes too much time! So, choose a single size block to work with.
One other idea to consider is a quick shortcut if you have plenty of larger sized pieces of fabric. Cut some of these equal to the size of the pieced blocks you’re sewing together. Then you can randomly place these larger squares throughout your quilt. Choose to use a mix of colors or select colors you want to emphasize in your quilt top. This way you don’t have to sew so many pieced quilt blocks!
Sewing a Simple Scrappy Log Cabin
When you’re ready to begin sewing, mix up your fabrics so colors and patterns are distributed throughout all your blocks. Don’t stress about which color works best, they will all look beautiful together. Besides, a few surprise combinations will create some wonderful contrast!
