The Quilted Blessing ~ A Mother’s Loving Wedding Gift
When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time standing on the hard-backed chair in the kitchen while Mama pinned the hem of the dress she was making. I knew not to fidget and remember curving my shoulders to avoid getting stuck while Mama pinned the collar to the bodice. I would look out of the sliding door wishing to be outside playing with my brothers in the process of fittings, but always loved twirling in the finished products.

As I grew, Mama made fewer colorful dresses with big sashes. In the summer months when we were all out of school, however, she would cut colorful fabrics and piece them together to form the most beautiful quilts. When I married, she purchased a double wedding ring quilt for me.

The quilt covered our bed for the first several years of our married life. It kept us warm, was a perfect picnic and reading companion, and even caught a few tears. Several years later, it cuddled our babies.
The Quilted Blessing

A Priceless Blessing
The wedding ring quilt has seen my family through many seasons. It’s been through births, graduations, cancer, healing, vacations, and transitions. It has brought comfort when we were sick, been warm when the power went out, and been a fort and shield from monsters for imaginative children. The quilt has covered our favorite pieces of furniture when we moved. It’s tattered, faded, and worn from much use and washing. It doesn’t look like much, but it is a priceless blessing.
I’m thankful for the gift my mother gave me. I am even more thankful that she taught me how to sew and craft, too. I have spent many hours creating beautiful gifts to bless friends and loved ones. That is the best gift–passing creative skill to someone else.
Your Creative Gift has a Grand Purpose

Use Your Creative Gift Well
Scripture tells us God has blessed each of us with a gift. He doesn’t bless us with gifts for our own appreciation alone. First Peter tells us that our gifts are to be used to help others. He also admonishes us to use our gifts well.
My mother had a gift to transform material into something special. As a child impatient to be outside, it didn’t seem like much of a gift. But the time, money, and effort my mother spent on each item she made and in passing on skills to me was an investment that will outlive her. What an amazing thing to realize that God has blessed us all with a gift that has grand purpose. He gave us our gifts to help others.
The ability to bless someone with something you have made is special. How many stories could quilts tell? What secrets they hold close to the chest of those who pray or cry into them. What a blessing to know someone loves you enough to give such a treasure or to love someone enough to give a gift so great.
Create More Beauty in Your Life Every Day

Create More Beauty in the Lives of Others
Colorful fabric in the hands of a gifted creative who lovingly arranges and pieces the material into a piece of art becomes part of an artist’s legacy and part of a family’s history. It is a gift. The gift of creating comes from our heavenly Father, who created everything. It’s a marvelous thing to create more beauty in the lives of others.
Are you ready to be a blessing? Are you ready to use the gifts God has given you–an eye for detail, the skill of using needle and thread, the patience required to produce art? God has given you a gift. How can you make the most of it? Don’t wait to start. Use your gift well.
