Once the quilt block is made, then it’s time to assemble the hot pad. You’ll be amazed how simple it is to put together. It finishes very quickly! This is a great way to use up those scraps you’ve been holding on to. So, let’s get started!
Gather Your Scraps

Gather all your scrap fabrics and pull your favorites. These can be any size or shape, as we’ll be cutting and piecing them into strips later. You’ll want enough fabric to make 40 or more rectangles. Plus, a fat quarter or similar sized fabric for the backing.

Next, sort your scraps into groups by color or pattern. This will help create a balanced look for your quilt and give you direction for your design. Once you have them sorted, it’s time to start cutting rectangles. Use a rotary cutter with a sharp rotary blade and ruler to cut your scraps into 2.5-inch by 4.5-inch pieces. You will need 40 rectangles to create a 16-inch by 20-inch hot pad.

Now begin to layout out block. Choose to either follow the example in the video tutorial or create your own design. Begin placing pieces together and decide which looks best next to another. Try a couple of different ideas to see which you like best.

Once your design is finalized, it’s time to assemble your potato chip block. You begin in the middle by sewing the two center squares together along the long edge. Press the seam to the darker fabric. Then continue adding the rows as shown in these photos and in the video tutorial. As you finish each row, press the seam towards the outer edges. Your finished block should measure 16.5-inches by 20.5-inches.

Layer & Baste Your Quilt Sandwich
Once your quilt top is finished, it’s time to assemble one layer of cotton batting on each side of the Insul-Brite. Place this on top of the backing fabric and add the pieced quilt on top. Baste them together to hold everything in place. I recommend spray basting as it’s quick and easy with no pins to keep track of!

Now it’s time to quilt! Keep in mind that five layers create a very thick quilt sandwich, so this is a perfect time to use your walking foot. Your quilting will be faster and more controlled this way! Once you’ve finished quilting, it’s time to trim any excess fabric and square up your quilt. Make sure all the edges are straight and even.
Finishing Your Super-Sized Hot Pad
The final step is binding your quilt. This is another perfect way to use those scraps! Sew them into a long strip, fold it in half, and make a beautiful binding. You may either hand stitch or machine stitch the binding in place. You’ve done it, your stunning scrappy super-sized hot pad is complete!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and feel inspired to create your own scrappy super-sized hot pad. Happy Quilting!
