You did all the work. You picked out the perfect fabrics, sewed your nine-patch blocks, made those magic cuts, and now you’ve got a gorgeous stack of these super versatile blocks. So, the natural thing to do is to lay them out with all the blocks facing the same way.
Yes, it’s fine. It’s a quilt. It’ll be cozy. But you didn’t do all that work for “fine.” You want a quilt that makes people stop in their tracks and ask, “Wow, how did you do that?” This exciting half square triangle (HST) layout definitely does that. Here’s a very different Disappearing 9-Patch design.
How to Make a 9-Patch Block

The key to it all is the basic 9-patch quilt block that’s been around for over 100 years. Simply explained, nine equal squares are sewn into a 3 x 3 grid. The video tutorial above has a complete step-by-step demonstration if you’ve not made this block before.
Charm Squares, or 5-inch squares are my go-to for nine-patch blocks. It’s a perfect way to use up any leftover charm packs you have lying around. Here’s a little pro tip: press the 9-patch seams of your top and bottom rows in one direction and your middle row in the opposite. This helps your seams nest together perfectly, giving you those sharp, clean corners everyone loves.
Once your nine-patch is sewn, it’s time to get creative. You cut the block in half vertically, right down the middle. Then, you cut it in half again, horizontally. And just like that, one block becomes four smaller, way more interesting pieces. These four little units are what we’d use to build our disappearing 9-patch design. But not anymore!
This isn’t an ordinary disappearing 9-patch quilt block. There are a few extra steps that will take this simple 9-patch to a new level.

Marking a Disappearing 9-Patch
With our 9-patch blocks pressed, it’s time for the next steps, which is where the magic happens! First, we layer our 9-patch, right sides together, with a same-size background square. Next, we draw two diagonal lines from corner to corner to make a large ‘X’.
Now it’s time to sew. Begin in one corner and sew a seam ¼-inch away from the line to the opposite corner. Turn the 9-patch around and continue sewing back to the original corner. Repeat this sewing process for the opposite corner. With your sewing finished, it’s time to cut!
First cut along both diagonal lines, without moving the block. Now it’s time for the vertical and horizontal cuts through the center. When you finish cutting, there will be 8 cut triangles. This is where the fun begins but give them a good pressing so the seam allowance goes towards the background fabric.
